At the end of the 4th century, a large number population lived
already in Savaria (Szombathely) and the congregation exercised its religion
in the cathedral built in the honour of the martyr bishop, Quirinus. A
church has been built over the house where St. Martin was born.
Attila destroyed
the Christianity in Savaria; then, in the Middle Age the Christian life
began to bloom once again. Dominicans and Franciscans have settled down
here. Later on, the chapter from Vasvár fled his documents to Szombathely,
away from the Turks.
Maria Theresa
established the Szombathely Diocese. The first bishop of this, became János
Szily who shaped up the baroque centre of the city by erecting the cathedral
and other public buildings. The succeeding bishops enriched the spiritual
life of the city up to 1948. During the communism, the social life of the
Church has been restricted. After the change of regime, several church
schools began again their activity.
The author presents
a general outline of the history of the Lutherans in Vas County from the
beginnings of the reformation up to the present days. Sárvár
was the cradle of the reformation in this region, the second centre being
Csepreg. The author follows back the history of the Lutheranism at Kemenesalja,
Kõszeg, Körmend and the Vendvidék. Then, in a separate
chapter, he lists the renowned intellectuals emerged from the Lutherans.
Finally, analysing the present situation, he states that the absolutism
following the 2nd World War caused a lot of losses. After this, the Lutheranism
in Vas County was able to begin a new life - in the spirit of ecumenism.
First, in Vas
County, the Lutheran trend of the Reformation has been spreading and later
the Swiss Creed as well, especially in Õrség, which lies
in the southern part of the county. The two trends separated on the theological
dispute at Csepreg, in 1591. The reformed congregations were almost destroyed
in the 1630s when during the Counter-Reformation - starting with the conversion
to Catholic religion of the aristocracy - their congregation and pastors
were chased, their churches were taken away. The majority of the reformed
churches and schools were built after the Religious Toleration Decree of
Joseph II. From that time on, the Reformed Church grew both spiritually
and materially. Its development has been significantly hindered by the
Trianon Peace Treaty in 1920 and later on by the communist oppression.
The number of reformats in Vas County is presently about 6 000, 10 pastors
are serving in 9 main parish churches and 5 further associate parish churches.
The mission
of the basic medical researches should be determined by the "orders" of
the patients' treatment. The relationship between these two areas is apparently
clear - however, the co-operation between the clinical personnel and the
researchers is often burdened by disturbing circumstances. A part of the
medical practitioners, for instance, expects quickly applicable results
from the research. Unfortunately, this doesn't "work" so simply.
In the case of glaucoma, an important information is provided by clearing
up the fact, on which anatomical ways the acceleratiion of the aqueous
humor flow-away is done.
In the experimental study of the lens, it is a significant recognition
that a compound of the lens, the alpha-crystalline has a protective, "defect-repairing"
role.
There is still no applicable solution leading to good clinical results
in the retina transplantation.
Following the
body size changes of the new-borns is an important area in exploration
of the side-phenomenon of the secular trend. The study comprises the body
sizes of the new-borns born alive at Szombathely, on the Markusovszky Hospital's
Obstetric Ward between 1994-95-96. The results of the study may be considered
as regional data of the period after regime change and may be qualified
as data publication. The changes in data pool and frequency charts provide
information for later studies.
Erzsébet
Batthyány (1619-1674) was the member of one of the greatest and
most aristocratic families of Transdanubia. In 1638 she married the Count
György Erdõdy, the later Superintendent of the Royal Treasury.
After this, she mostly lived in the Erdõdy Castle at Vép.
Similar to her husband and her brother, Ádám Batthyány,
she was prominent in charity, she supported the settling of the Dominicans
in Szombathely and Sopron. From her donations, the St Martin church has
been rebuilt between 1668-1672. She donated a significant sum for establishing
the Hospital in Szombathely. She offered to the Dominicans her house at
Sopron and the Bergwerk village with accessories as well as the tithe and
mining right of the Olbendorf village. The Last Will published here was
dated on 2nd August 1673. She disposed over the funeral, her properties
and listed her loan and pawn issues. Through her disposals, a light is
thrown on her extended relations with her relatives and social relations,
thus we may have a glance into the life of a 17th-Century aristocrat woman.
The document came from the Dominican Order's archives to the Vas County
Archive.
On the turn
of the century, the position of the chief engineer in Szombathely has been
possessed by Ödön Bodányi. The specialist originally started
as railway engineer, led the engineer office of Szombathely from 1899 to
1921 and controlled the exemplary modernisation of the city. The engineer
whose knowledge has been renowned both in Hungary and abroad, performed
a significant work on the area of specialised literature as well. He carried
out a pioneer work through his popular books about city development and
provided help for the modernisation of the underdeveloped Hungarian cities.
The chief engineer had religious ideology, was susceptible to arts, had
sense of musicality and was known as performer as well. He was a colourful,
highly respected personality of the city. Nevertheless, he was involved
into such disciplinary and bribery issues that required authority inquiries.
Despite of the acquittal, the repulation of the chief engineer has been
heavily damaged by these scandalous cases.
At the centenary
of the 1848/49 Revolution and War of Independence, began a great programme
series. The Communist Party recognised that the celebrations provide an
exceptional possibility for speeding up the power takeover. The communist
took every opportunity to mediate the revaluation of the 1848's meaning.
The diction didn't glorify the 1848 itself, but the "working people", the
Communist Party and the Soviet Union. Therefore, the population didn't
celebrate the ideas and heroes of 1848 but the glorification of the turn
and the communist take-over.
