PETER CHOLNOKY: THE PHYSICIAN'S WORD
Lajos Markusovszky was not only founder of Orvosi Hetilap, the first significant
professional medical journal in Hungarian and one of the most excellent
Hungarian health organisator in the nineteenth century but also artist
of the word: he regarded word as the most important tool in the physician's
hands. Inspired by his example, the auther reviews the present state of
the Hungarian medical language and the impact of the word in disclosing
prognosis and declaring willingness to provide medical and human help up
to the very end. He thinks that word still remains the physician's most
important weapon in fighting against suffering and death.
KÁLMÁN SZÉLL: THE FOUNDER OF THE MARKUSOVSZKY HOSPITAL (Dr. Ernõ Petõ)
The author remembers the director surgeon of the Vas County Hospital who
died 40 years ago. Petõ came to Szombathely during the First World
War as army-doctor. After the War he contributed - unsparing in his material
and spiritual efforts - to the building of the Vas County and Szombathely
City's new public hospital and he became the first director of it. Due
to his Jewish origins the Hungarian Nazis have chased him and he was forced
to refuge. In 1952 - due to political reasons - he was placed to Sárvár
where he has worked six years. Petõ roved a typical 20th-century-career,
characteristic to Hungarians - the author summarises the lessons of this.
He has not been rehabilitated in his life. The justice of the history reached
him 10 years after the system-changeover. The study of the author serves
this purpose as well. The study presents him as an example of hospital-founder,
school-creator, good surgeon, exceptional leader and high-minded man for
the posterity.
LAJOS ISTVÁN: THE RE-CREATOR OF THE MARKUSOVSZKY HOSPITAL (Remembrances about Dr. Ernõ Petõ)
On the 40th anniversary of his death, the author recalls his personal reminiscences
about the personality, working style and several proofs of the organising
ability of Ernõ Petõ as well as some phases of his hospitaldirectorship.
He relates in detail about the period when Ernõ Petõ, the
founder of the hospital, returning from the illegality, reorganised the
anarchical hospital. He organised new departments with exceptional experts
and created the right conditions for the spiritual and scientific recovery,
which quickly led to the winning of the title of the first Hungarian didactical
hospital.
FERENC TÓTH: THE PRINCE OF RAGUZA AT SZOMBATHELY
Marshal Marmont (1774-1851) reached Szombathely during the Hungarian journey
of the Prince of Raguza. He mentions the city and teh surroundings in his
book about the Hungarian trip. The present study remembers the life and
the possible motivations of the Hungarian journey of the great French soldier
and statesman. The popular travel book - despite of its relatively coolish
welcome in Hungary - contributed to familiarise Europe more widely with
Szombathely.
ZSOLT BAJZIK: THE HISTORY OF THE SÓSKÚTI SPA ANDMINERAL WATER SPRING BETWEEN 1850-1920
After the fall of the War of Independence, the continuation of the former
bathing life proved to be a vain hope at Sóskút, near Németújvár
(today: Güssing, Austria). Due to the deficit-producing business,
the owners of the spa were changing rapidly and at the end of the 19th
century its operation became completely impossible. At the beginning of
the 1900es, the county's press promoted only the Vita and Paula mineral
waters bottled at Sóskút. For the utilisation of the healing
water of the springs, in 1917 the VITA Mineral Waters Inc. was founded.
After the Trianon Treaty, the diversified Hungarian history of the Sóskút
was terminated and a new era began - within other state's borders.
LAJOS KUNTÁR: THE ORDEAL OF THE PARISH-PRIESTOF NAGYNARDA BECAUSE OF TRIANON
The Trianon Treaty that dismembered Hungary brought a lot of misery and
pain for the Hungarian people. The irredentism claiming the revision has
been consciously taught in the schools during the Horthy-period. On the
areas of Vas County that have been broken down and given to Austria, an
opposition has been formed out. József Kuntár, the parish-pries
who propagated the loyalty to the Hungarian motherland was arrested by
the Austrian gendarmes and was thrown into prison. His congregation, however,
has unanimously and firmly held brief for him, they have rescued
him and with their commitment they achieved the termination of the foreign
occupation. His contemporaries have acknowledged the sacrifice of József
Kuntár; his former congregation and their descendants steadily keep
his memory.
ERZSÉBET SMIDT: CONTRIBUTIONS TO THE HISTORYOF THE SZOMBATHELY CITY HALL BETWEEN 1838-1945
The Szombathely city hall has been bombed in 1945 but the foundation documents
remained intact and have been taken into inventory in 1947. Today, these
documents are kept at the Smidt Museum. With the help of the documents
the author evokes some significant episodes of the building's history.
LÁSZLÓ GYÜRKI: THE SHIPWRECK OF APOSTLE PAUL: AT MALTA OR KEFALLINIA?
Paul apostle, on his way to Rome was shipwrecked at the lsle of "Melité"
(the Acts of the Apostles 28,1). The island has been identified as Malta.
H. Warnecke, in his book published in 1987 states that the shipwreck occurred
at the island of Kefallinia, in the Livadi-Bay along the Western borders
of Greece. He lists meteorological, archaeological and other proofs. The
author of this present paper visited Kefallinia and Malta and relates about
the written documents according to which Warnecke's theory is unsustainable.
The shipwreck happened at the Malta island, in the St. Paul-Bay or in the
Mellieha-Bay.
KÁROLY VIG: PARADIGMS IN EVOLUTION ECOLOGY
At the beginning of the 60es two scientific studies were published that
completely changed the approach of their own science. The first: the book
of Thomas Kuhn published in 1962, The Structure of Scientific Revolutions
and the other: Paul R. Erlich and Peter H. Raven, Butterflies and Plants:
A Study in Coevolution. With the help of the thought of Kuhn - according
to which the evolution of the science is divided into phases separated
by scientific revolutions - we examine the fate and effect of the coevolution
theory created by the American author pair on the field of evolution ecology.
We propound that the theory of the coevolution - crystallised into a paradigm
- determined for a long period the development of the science studying
the relation between the herbivorous insects and their nutritive plants.
Then, we examine how the newer theory, the sequential or tracking evolution
derived from the coevolution theory's crisis and how it reformed the approach
of this science.
TAMÁS FEHÉR: THE MASTER OF THE DOCUMENTARY FILM (József Magyar)
The life-work of József Magyar - born in Vas County - consists of
more than 120, partly short, partly long - documentaries and 5 feature
pictures that are a weepy-merry - but still sad - entertaining collection
of the contradictions of a faithless system. It is characteristic to its
popularity that his picture "Our School" wass held on programmes for 25
weeks in the Zrínyi movie at Budapest. Besides the characterisation
of his lifework, here can be found the whole list of his pictures and his
small biography.
